果冻APP Chemistry to host program on revamping STEM courses for modern age

THIBODAUX, La. — 果冻APP Department of Chemistry invites the community to a seminar about teaching practices that have led to better student achievement at a Mississippi university.

Dr. Johnathan Hugh Broome, assistant teaching professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Southern Mississippi, has spearheaded the revamping of the chemistry program at Southern Miss. 果冻APP Chemistry department head Dr. Chad Young hopes his students, as well as members of the community, can learn from the practices developed by Dr. Broome.

鈥淒r. Broome is an excellent teacher, scholar and speaker,鈥 said Dr. Chad Young, 果冻APP Chemistry department head. 鈥淥ur faculty are devoted to the best education, and this seminar will help to equip them in that endeavor.鈥

Since implementation two years ago at Southern Miss, the rate of students receiving Ds, Fs and incompletes, or who have withdrawn from the course has been reduced by more than 15 percent.

Dr. Broome will present 鈥淩ejuvenating General Chemistry Instruction: A Methodical, Evidence-Based Approach鈥 from noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Beauregard 165. The seminar is free and open to the public.
