鈥淲ith my background in music, I’ve taken on music as one of my liaison areas, so there’s already that opportunity to work with them,鈥� she said. 鈥淢usic students, or at least I did, tend to see a lot of the same group of people, in classes they are taking from the same group of professors, so I thought it was a cool opportunity for us to meet more of the campus, and I鈥檇 like to bring that back.鈥�

Hornback, who plays the bass clarinet, said her path toward becoming a librarian started with a career conversation with professor Dr. Michael Bartnik, who has since moved on to Lamar University.聽

鈥淚 started my program pursuing music education, but I didn鈥檛 really want to be a band director,鈥� she said. 鈥淒r. Bartnik mentioned music librarianship, and after some research, I thought it sounded interesting.鈥�

So after graduating from 果冻APP, Hornback earned her Master鈥檚 of Science in Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During that time, she also earned an internship at Duke University鈥檚 Music Library.聽

鈥淚t was cool to blend my path in music and the field I decided to try out together,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t helped it click that librarianship is the career for me.鈥�

And once in her career, librarianship was a fairly natural fit for her as she enjoys reading and participating in book clubs with friends. She also has two cats, Alfredo and Pesto, which she says are a requirement for becoming a librarian.

鈥淚 have a hobby of collecting hobbies,鈥� Hornback said. 鈥淚n addition to having cats, all librarians have a mandated grandma hobby and mine is cross stitch. I also play video games with friends though I am more of a single player person. I play an MMO by myself, Guild Wars 2.鈥�

Following some time as a public librarian in Alabama, Hornback said she was excited when she saw the opportunity at 果冻APP and is happy to be home in Thibodaux again.

Since repairs following Hurricane Ida, the Government Information department has been closed, and Hornback will be in charge of finishing the rebuild to open it up to the public and students. Though when open, the stacks will be closed, which will mean she or a student worker will need to assist students in fetching materials.

鈥淩ebuilding something like this from the ground up and to have an influence on the way it is put back together is appealing to me,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 also enjoy the organizational side of librarianship.

鈥淲ith interruptions, such as a recent pipe leak, it has not quite gone as expected, but it is still a fun project and I look forward to welcoming students.鈥�

Library Director Brandy Burbante said it鈥檚 unfortunate that the department has experienced so many setbacks, but it鈥檚 given her a good look at Hornback鈥檚 character.

鈥淚 think Jade is doing great so far,鈥� Burbante said. 鈥淭he fact that she has been able to handle hiccups in trying to get the Government Information department reopened, has shown her adaptability and flexibility, which are both skills that we have to have as librarians in higher education.鈥�

Short term, besides of course putting the department back together, Hornback said her goal is to show off the department鈥檚 resources in various displays and during campus events. And also to work on her liaison duties with departments around campus, including music.

鈥淲e have only put on a music event in the library once since Jade was a student, but that was hosted by international students,鈥� Burbante said. 鈥淚 am always open to innovative programming ideas like this that create collaboration across disciplines, so having Jade鈥檚 connection with the music department will be valuable to enhance our relationship with that community.鈥�
