{"id":1082,"date":"2009-12-03T12:15:17","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T17:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/?p=1082"},"modified":"2009-12-03T12:15:17","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T17:15:17","slug":"nicholls-to-award-more-than-650-degrees-saturday-dec-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/2009\/12\/03\/nicholls-to-award-more-than-650-degrees-saturday-dec-12\/","title":{"rendered":"果冻APP to award more than 650 degrees Saturday, Dec. 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THIBODAUX \u2013 Ken Wells, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and author \u2013 and a native of Bayou Black \u2013 will be the keynote speaker Saturday, Dec. 12, when 果冻APP State  University confers about 650 degrees during commencement exercises in Stopher Gymnasium.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1083\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1083\" title=\"07LVwells\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2009\/12\/Wells.jpg\" alt=\"Wells\" width=\"239\" height=\"298\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wells<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wells will speak at 10 a.m. to graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and University College. At 2 p.m. he will address graduates of the College of Business Administration and the College of Nursing and Allied Health.<\/p>\n<p>A 1971 Hall of Fame graduate of 果冻APP and former managing editor of the Courier in Houma, Wells received multiple Pulitzer Prize nominations for his coverage of environmental damage to the Everglades, which appeared in the Miami Herald; coverage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, which appeared in the Wall Street Journal; and the non-fiction book \u201cThe Good Pirates of the Forgotten Bayous,\u201d published by the Yale University Press. Wells has also authored several novels, and he continues his journalistic career as a writer-at-large for Bloomberg News\u2019 projects and investigations team. In March 2009, Louisiana Public Broadcasting honored him as a \u201cLouisiana Legend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to delivering the keynote addresses, Wells will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Letters from 果冻APP.<\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Clyde J. Mahler of Maria Immacolata Catholic Church in Houma will offer the invocation and benediction at the morning ceremony, and Bishop Hurley J.
